The SJI Historical Society met at 2:00 pm, January 21 2025, at the St.

The SJI Historical Society met at 2:00 pm, January 21 2025, at the St. Joseph Twp Public Library. In attendance were Will Clarke, Bernie Crosby, Steve Frech, Grant Adcock, Paul Young, Debby and Dave Thomlinson, Aleen Kent, Carole Sutherland and Jason Garside.  Will called the meeting to order at 2:03 pm.

Minutes from Nov 21 2024 were read by Bernie.

Motion to accept by Debby, second by Steve.                           Carried

 

Financial reports for Nov, Dec and Yearend were presented by Steve. From our yearend, the starting balance was $5,657.01, end balance $7,064.90, total assets $7,159.05. Income for the year was $4,358.10 and expenses $2,950.21.

Motion to accept by Steve, second by Paul.                              Carried

 

New Business:

  • Elections: Elections for President, Treasurer and Secretary were brought forward.  Motion by Aleen, second by Paul and Carole that the current members remain in their positions. Will, Steve and Bernie accepted.

Motion by Dave, second by Debby that Elections be closed Carried

 

  • Dues – collected at the end of the meeting – Grant, Will, Bernie & Jim, Aleen, Carole, Debby & Dave, Paul & Diane, Jason

 

Committee Reports

  • Cemeteries – Discussion on the U Line Cemetery being on Crown Land and placement of a sign. It was felt that wouldn’t be a problem. A cost from Gord Hawdon for a sign the same as Tenby Bay and Mountain Maple will determined by Bernie.

 Bernie has access to the Holy Trinity files and is waiting on a few corrections and the map will be complete and the book updated. Tenby Bay is up to date except for 3 pictures and Mountain Maple needs a correction to the map. St. Joseph and Grace United Cemeteries have to be updated.

 

  • Fundraisers – nothing new to report at this time.

 

  • Historical signs – Bernie will update our list of 80 designated sites for future discussion on additional signs.

 

  • Interviews – discussion continued on the method to get copies to interviewees. May by a project for future to try and transcribe our interviews.

 

  • News Clippings – Bernie will check with Paulette to see if she has continued typing from Alice’s binders. We will get more articles for availability.

 

Open Forum

  • Bernie brought copies of framed island maps that could possibly be a future fund raiser. Would have to be by order, not a mass production. Jason took pictures to check on having these done.

 

Next meeting – out next meeting will be February 18 2025 at the Library.

 The SJI Historical Society met at 2:00 pm, November 19, 2024, at the St. Joseph Twp Public Library. In attendance were Will Clarke, Bernie Crosby, Eitel Beduhn, Roy Broadhagen, Grant Adcock, and Carole Sutherland.  Will called the meeting to order at 2:06 pm.

Minutes from Oct 15 2024 were read by Bernie.

Motion to accept by Eitel, second by Grant.              Carried

 

Financial report for Aug 31 2024 as amended, were presented by Bernie.

Starting balance $5,477.65, end balance $5,162.90. Total assets $5,257.05.

Oct 31, 2024 start balance $6,299.00, end balance $6,587.90. Total assets $6,682.05.

Motion to accept by Bernie, second by Eitel.                             Carried

 

New Business:

  • Minutes to web site – May, June and Sept are added and will continue once they are accepted.

 

Committee Reports

  • Cemeteries – the map as done for Holy Trinity will be completed as is and copies made

A sign cost will determined for the U Line Catholic cemetery.

 

  • Fundraisers – Landowner maps – 180 were ordered and we have 23 remaining. Bernie will order 1 dozen tubes.
  • Recipe book – 250 were ordered and we have 56 remaining. Bernie will put ¼ page ad in Clippings for Christmas

 

  • Historical signs – Will checked the Town Centre sign for Richards Landing. It will remain as is.

Bernie will update our list of 80 designated sites for future discussion on additional signs.

Townships will be sent reminders in the spring to clear.

 

  • Interviews – due to CD’s not being readily usable by most people, a new method to get our interviews out will be explored. We will attempt to have those interviewed, checked with for permission.  Will will also contact the schools to advise we have these CD’s available to students for study.
  • News Clippings – we will check with Paul to see if he wishes to continue with these. Bernie will do a few more articles for availability.

 Open Forum

  • Roy brought a few questionnaires he had his grand kids compile for life interviews. Grant had suggested perhaps some of these questions could be included in future interviews.  We could also put copies of these in our files.

 Next meeting – out next meeting as a lunch was discussed.  Bernie will send out an email checking on suggestions on interest and where to go.  Probably Stubbees, Black Bear or Ije’s on December 19th.

Minutes from Sept 17 2024 were read by Bernie. Corrections to financial figures to be amended as noted by Eitel.  Bernie will correct figures.

  • Paulette had emailed some boards she had found to replace the old display boards. Discussion was held and this will be put off till the new year.
  • Harvest Fest follow-up. Will and Aleen attended a Jocelyn Recreation Committee meeting on Sept 25 2024 to voice our concerns re the House and School.  As there were only 3 members attending, not a quorum, nothing was resolved.
  • Minutes will be placed on the web site going forward. The written book will be maintained until yearend and then filed.
